The added value of BigData Analytics for the Maritime Industry: A BigDataStack real-time shipping use-case demonstration @Posidonia 2020

Wednesday, October 28, 2020 - 16:45
Athens

Update: the Poseidonia event 2020 that should have been held on the 26-30 October in Athens, Greece, it has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic

The new data-driven industrial revolution highlights the need for big data technologies and experts to unlock the potential in various application domains. To this end, the BigDataStack project delivers a complete high-performance stack of technologies addressing the emerging needs of data operations and applications. BigDataStack promotes automation and quality and ensures that the provided data are meaningful, of value and fit-for-purpose through its Data as a Service offering that addresses the complete data path with approaches for data cleaning, modelling, semantic interoperability, and distributed storage.

The workshop is organised by the BigDataStack project and aims to foster the uptake of the BigDataStack solution with end-users in the maritime sector by illustrating the added value of BigData analytics and experts for the full use of the technologies, as highlighted by the EC commissioner Thierry Breton “urging the Europe to help EU companies to better capitalise on the electronic information they generate” For an organization that successfully implements big data analytics, benefits include reducing costs, providing useful insights and increasing productivity. However, this adoption is not an easy task and has not always been successful due to the challenges big data presents. To use big data, organizations must define and properly implement multiple processes, overcoming several challenges such as data availability and labelling and shortage of skills. (BDVe Policy Brief Policy4Data, October 2019).

The objective of this session is to illustrate the added value of big data analytics for the maritime industry and showcase off-the-shelf solutions provided by H2020 project BigDataStackimplemented by Danaos.

BigDataStack Real-Time Ship Management use case focuses on Data As A Service

Danaos platform is an integrated web-based service that combines data from sensors onboard, operational data from a shipping company’s database and weather data in order to assist the technical and operations department of a shipping company to monitor its vessels. Its practical use is to provide an overview of a vessel’s performance and alert the users when policy-based rules are violated. By incorporating these aspects through the Danaos platform,   BigDataStack allows shipping companies to utilize their data and use them in a difficult decision-making process, such as:

  1. Monitor the main engine of a vessel.
  2. Identify malfunction patterns, predict likely failures and notify accordingly the supply department.
  3. Automatically order the appropriate spare part and choose the port where it should be delivered on route.
  4. Minimize the overall maintenance cost.
  5. Avoid off-hire seasons due to machinery failures and unexpected but compulsory maintenance.
